You can get a grant to see you through your old age. An older person’s grant is paid to people who are 60 years or older. This grant used to be called the old age pension.
How to know if Your Qualified for Sassa Old age grant?
You must:
- be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee
- live in South Africa
- not receive any other social grant for yourself
- not be cared for in a state institution
- not earn more than R86 280 if you are single or R172 560 if married.
- not have assets worth more than 1 227 600 if you are single or R2 455 200 if you are married.
LAPSE OR SUSPENSION OF BENEFITS
Beyond the above, your grant may be suspended by the agency if:
- Circumstances change and you’re earning more money than is alotted.
- If you fail to co-operate with a SASSA official during your review.
- It is found you committed fraud and misrepresented yourself in the application.
- Should you be absent from the country for three months.
- Should you not claim your benefits for three months.
As of Tuesday 3 December 2024, the next pay day, Older Person grants will pay the following:
- Older Person’s Grant (under 75 years): R2 190 per month.
- Older Person’s Grant (older than 75 years): R2 210 per month.
Sassa Old Age Grant Payment Amount
The amount of the old age grant varies with an individual’s age. As of the last adjusted amount for SASSA grants dated April 1, 2024, persons aged between 60 to 74 years will receive a payment of R2,180 per person, whereas those from the age of 75 years will get R2,200 per person.
Come October 1, 2024, the age grant monthly payments will go up by an extra R10 per person. The new amount for persons aged 60 and 74 years will be R2,190 per person per month while beneficiaries aged 75 years and above will receive R2,210 per person per month.
Sassa Old Age Grant Acceptable payment Method
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay the grant to you through one of the following methods:
- cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
- electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
- institutions (e.g. old age home).
Note: If you are unable to collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office, or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.
WILL GRANTS INCREASE IN 2025?
Therefore, looking into our crystal ball, here’s how we see SASSA ‘core’ grants increasing in 2025. Across the board, we believe grants will increase by only 5% in April 2025. This is slightly more than 2024’s 4.8% increase. Therefore, they should breakdown like so:
- SASSA Old-Age Grants (aged 60 to 74) increase from R2 190 to R2 290 in April 2025. And again by R10 to R2 300 in October 2025.
- SASSA Old-Age Grants (75 and older) increase from R2 210 to R2 310 in April 2025. And again by R10 to R2 320 in October 2025.
- SASSA Disability and Childcare Dependency grants increase from R2 190 to R2 290 in April 2025. And again by R10 to R2 300 in October 2025.
- SASSA War Veterans increase from R2 190 to R2 290 in April 2025. And again by R10 to R2 300 in October 2025.
